Castles in Isle of Man

A self-governing Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man has been inhabited and fortified for over a thousand years. Castle Rushen in Castletown — the island's ancient capital — is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, built on Norse foundations from the 10th century and expanded by the Kings of Man and the Isles, the Lords of Mann, and the Stanley Earls of Derby. The island is also home to Tynwald, claimed to be the world's oldest continuously functioning parliament, which has met every year since at least the 10th century.
