Guarene Castle

Castello di Guarene stands on the site of a feudal manor documented as early as 1200, in the Roero hills of Piedmont — a landscape later inscribed as part of the UNESCO wine-growing heritage of the region. In 1726, Count Carlo Giacinto Roero began an extensive reconstruction, transforming the medieval manor into a Baroque summer residence with architecture influenced by Filippo Juvarra, the celebrated architect who was both friend and mentor to the count. The prestige of the completed residence drew royal attention: the King and Queen of Sardinia visited in 1773.

Ownership passed to the Provana di Collegno family in 1899, and the castle remained a private residence until 2011, when new owners acquired the property and converted it into a luxury hotel. Today's 12 rooms and suites — eight on the third floor named after historical figures, four on the ground floor — occupy the historic Baroque building itself, ranging from a 40-square-meter Classic Room to a 200-square-meter Luxury Suite, alongside the estate's elliptical-plan Chapel of Santa Teresa and a small museum dedicated to the castle's history.

Filippo Juvarra's influence on the 1726 reconstruction connects Guarene to one of the defining figures of the Piedmontese Baroque, whose broader body of work reshaped the architectural identity of the House of Savoy's territory during the same period.

The 1773 visit by the King and Queen of Sardinia marks the moment the Roero family's summer residence reached the height of its social prestige, a peak the building's later 19th- and 20th-century private ownership under the Provana di Collegno family maintained without the same public visibility.

The 2011 conversion into a hotel preserved rather than replaced the building's Baroque character, with today's 12 rooms distributed across the same structure the count completed nearly three centuries earlier — no modern annex was added to accommodate the property's new hospitality function.

The surrounding Roero and neighboring Langhe hills, both UNESCO-listed wine landscapes, give guests staying at Guarene direct access to one of Italy's most celebrated wine regions, with the town of Alba a short drive away for its own historic center and white-truffle tradition.
