Ruspoli Castle stands at the eastern end of Vignanello, in the Province of Viterbo, a Renaissance castle whose present layout dates largely to a redesign carried out around 1575. The property's recorded history begins earlier, however: in 1531, Pope Clement VII gave the castle to Beatrice Farnese Baglioni, placing it within the orbit of one of Renaissance Italy's most powerful families. From Beatrice, the castle passed to her daughter Ortensia and, through her, into the Sforza Marescotti family line.

The castle's single most distinctive feature is its garden rather than its architecture: a formal, box-hedge Renaissance garden laid out around 1610 by Ottavia Orsini. Ottavia was the daughter of Vicino Orsini, the eccentric patron behind the famous garden of monsters at nearby Bomarzo, and her own design at Vignanello took a very different, geometric direction — structured parterres rather than Bomarzo's grotesque sculpture. The garden remains the castle's signature element to this day.

The Ruspoli family has held the castle since 1704, and — unusually for a property of this age open to visitors — it remains their home rather than a museum piece. One room on the guided route carries particular family significance: the Chapel of Saint Hyacinth (Giacinta) Marescotti, dedicated to a member of the Marescotti line who was later canonised.

The standard visit is a one-hour guided tour conducted by the castle's own staff, in Italian or English, covering the piano nobile and main halls, the chapel, and finishing in the Renaissance garden. Visitors are welcome to remain afterward in the garden and the adjoining Marescotta Park at their own pace. Arrival around 20 minutes before the scheduled time is recommended, and visitors should bring the ticket issued directly by the tour provider rather than relying solely on the auto-generated GetYourGuide voucher. Parking is available at Via dell'Uliveto 200, near the castle entrance. The visit does not include transport, food or refreshments.
