Althörnitz Castle

Althörnitz Castle was built more than 350 years ago by Christian von Hartig in what is now Bertsdorf-Hörnitz, near Zittau in Saxony's Oberlausitz (Upper Lusatia) region, close to the modern borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. The castle's most distinctive historical claim is scientific rather than military or aristocratic: alchemists including Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus and Johann Friedrich Böttger are recorded as having conducted secret research here in pursuit of "white gold" — the porcelain formula that would later be perfected at Meissen, making Althörnitz a minor but genuine footnote in the history of European porcelain.

Today's 74–75 room hotel splits its accommodation between two distinct parts of the estate: suites and deluxe castle rooms occupy the old Renaissance building and its tower, while Classic and Deluxe category rooms are in a more recently built, stylish extension facing the park. The 30,000m² castle park, at the easternmost point of Saxony, gives the property a genuinely spacious rural setting, with two restaurants, a bar, and — from autumn 2024 — a wellness area rounding out the estate's amenities.

The search for the secret of Chinese-style hard-paste porcelain was one of early 18th-century Europe's most closely guarded scientific quests, with numerous courts and individual researchers racing to reverse-engineer a material that had, until then, been an exclusively East Asian technical achievement. Tschirnhaus and Böttger's eventual success, commercialized at Meissen from 1710, made Saxony the first European producer of true porcelain — and Althörnitz's role in the preliminary research gives the castle a genuine, if secondary, place in that origin story.

The castle's location at Saxony's easternmost point, within the historic Oberlausitz region, places it in a border area shaped by centuries of shifting political control between German, Polish and Bohemian influence, giving the surrounding landscape and local culture a genuinely distinct character compared to the more centrally located castles elsewhere in this collection.

The division between the historic Renaissance building and tower and the newer park-side extension reflects a now-familiar pattern among this collection's larger historic estates, where a limited number of premium rooms occupy the original structure while a greater number of standard rooms are accommodated in purpose-built additions designed to blend visually with the historic core.

The 30,000m² park surrounding the castle gives Althörnitz one of the more spacious grounds among the properties in this collection, providing ample space for walking and outdoor relaxation directly on the estate without needing to travel further into the surrounding countryside.

The nearby "Zittau Mountains" (Zittauer Gebirge) and the Dreiländereck, the point where Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet, give guests staying at Althörnitz an unusual trinational hiking and sightseeing opportunity within a short distance of the castle, a genuinely distinctive regional feature not shared by castle-hotels elsewhere in Germany.

Meissen porcelain's eventual commercial success, built directly on the preliminary research associated with sites like Althörnitz, went on to make Saxony a major center of European decorative arts production for centuries, giving this relatively modest castle in the Oberlausitz a disproportionately significant place in the broader story of Saxon craftsmanship and courtly luxury goods.
