Proceno Castle

Proceno Castle sits in the Tuscia, the historic region spanning Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, in a commanding position over the Via Cassia, which for more than two thousand years channeled trade, cultural and religious traffic between Rome and northern Italy. The medieval complex consists of a pentagonal defensive wall, the keep (mastio), two minor towers, and a rampart walk, forming a compact, unified fortified whole.

Since 1644 the castle has belonged to the same family, the Cecchini, today known as Bisoni Cecchini, who have preserved and developed its historical heritage for more than three and a half centuries. Today the castle operates as an "albergo diffuso" — accommodation spread across different historic sections of the same walled enclosure — also offering dining, tastings of local Tuscia products, and musical and cultural events.

The castle's position on the Via Cassia connects it to one of ancient Rome's most enduring road networks, a route whose strategic and commercial importance long outlasted the Roman Empire itself, continuing to shape settlement patterns through the medieval period and beyond.

The Cecchini/Bisoni Cecchini family's unbroken 380-year ownership is a genuinely long tenure even by the standards of this collection, giving Proceno a rare continuity of stewardship rather than the more common pattern of multiple ownership changes and periods of abandonment.

Unlike some "albergo diffuso" properties spread across an entire village, Proceno's accommodation units are all contained within the single walled pentagonal fortification — a distinction that keeps the experience anchored to one compact historic structure rather than a dispersed hamlet.
