Serragiumenta Castle

The history of the Serragiumenta area and castle is tied to the Sangineto family, who ruled from the early 14th century until 1381, when the Sanseverino family began a four-century reign. Serragiumenta Castle is a magical place where an elegant garden frames a 16th-century residence, its towers and two prestigious staircases on the main facade enhancing its beauty.

More recently, the agricultural enterprise was founded in 1947 out of the passion of Federico Bilotti, and today carries a century-old history tied to the land and its produce. Located in the Altomonte area, in the heart of the Calabrian hills, at the foot of Pollino National Park and on the edge of the Sibari Plain, the castle today combines accommodation, agriculture, and rural tourism.

The successive five-century rule of the Sangineto and Sanseverino families ties Serragiumenta to the broader feudal history of Calabria, a region whose noble dynasties often held power over vast rural territories for far longer stretches than their counterparts in the more politically fragmented central and northern Italian city-states.

The 1947 founding of the agricultural enterprise by Federico Bilotti marks a deliberate 20th-century pivot from aristocratic residence to working farm, a transition that gives Serragiumenta a genuinely productive rural identity alongside its historic architecture.

The estate's position at the edge of the Sibari Plain connects it to the site of ancient Sybaris, one of the wealthiest and most legendarily luxurious cities of Magna Graecia, giving the surrounding landscape a layer of classical history well beyond the castle's own medieval and early modern story.

The accommodation split across the castle, a separate agriturismo building, and glamping units among the vineyards reflects the estate's broader identity as a working rural tourism operation rather than a single-purpose historic hotel.
