Castles in Montenegro

Montenegro's medieval fortifications are among the most dramatically situated in Europe. The Bay of Kotor — a landlocked sea fjord enclosed by 2,000-metre mountains — contains a UNESCO World Heritage walled city whose 4.5 kilometres of walls climb from sea level to 280 metres above the harbour. Budva's old town, perched on a coastal promontory, has been fortified for 2,500 years. Along the Adriatic coast, Venetian-built sea fortresses guard every headland.
