Uniejów Castle stands on the Warta river in the Łódź Voivodeship, built between 1360 and 1365 — some sources give 1350–1365 — for the Archbishop of Gniezno, Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki, a close associate of King Casimir the Great. The castle replaced an earlier wooden fortress on the site, destroyed by the Teutonic Order in a raid in 1331, giving the new brick castle a defensive role along the river from the outset.
A fire led to a major rebuilding in 1525–1534, during which the castle was greatly expanded and modernised, and most of its original Gothic character was lost in the process. The castle stopped functioning as a military stronghold in the 17th century and became more of a residence; the Toll family acquired it in 1836, and Aleksander Toll had it remodelled again, this time in the Classical style, in 1848 — making Uniejów a castle built up from several distinct historical layers rather than a single, pure medieval fortress.
The building was restored between 1956 and 1967 and used as an archive before its later conversion to hospitality use. Today Uniejów Castle houses a hotel and a conference centre.
